The bill was passed on Friday despite intense objections from certain opposition law makers. The session was chaired by Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, witnessed heated exchange as opposition members led by JUI-F representative Younus Zehri, criticized the bill saying it is in contrast with the Islamic teachings.
Protesting the move, some lawmakers tore the copies of the bill and disrupted proceedings, accusing the government of yielding to eternal pressures.
Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti defended the legislation, describing it as a long-overdue measure that prioritizes the welfare of children. Bugti explained that the draft has gone through under review for six months by parliamentary committee and cabinet approval, pressing upon the point that democratic process had been observed.
Under the new law anyone getting involved or arranging the child marriage may face strict penalties although, the exact punishments are yet to be published.
