LAHORE (Web Desk): The member of National assembly Syed Ali Qasim Gilani has urged the government to reconsiders the high charges of PTA taxes on mobile phones.

This move of Gillani has sparked hope in millions of mobile users who are struggling with high prices of mobiles and PTA taxes as well.

Syed Ali Gilani said that he was ready to make a resolution on the “unjust and excessive” PTA taxes. His move was supported by all the political parties.

However, the resolution is postponed as government have assured that Chairman of FBR and Gillani will be invited together for the Finance Committee meeting on 3 December, 2025.

Earlier, Ali Gillani, called these current taxes as “unjust and excessive” in a letter written to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance. He said these taxes are preventing millions of citizens from accessing digital tools.

He added that high import duties, sales taxes, and registration fees have pushed smartphones out of reach for ordinary Pakistanis.

Currently, the mobile phones that are priced above USD 500 are subjected to a 25% sales tax plus with an additional 18% general sales tax.

Numerous additional taxes, such as registration fees under the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), are imposed on both locally manufactured and imported equipment.

Gilani claims that these regulations are hurting small companies that depend on mobile technology and impeding Pakistan's digital development.

He declared, "Smartphones are no longer a luxury." "They are necessary for access to government and financial services, employment, and education." But taxes like PTA taxes and manufacturing taxes are making it hazardous.
