Punjab Assembly session sees heated debate over CCD performance

(Web Desk): Punjab Assembly members criticize Communication and Works (C&W) Department's performance and CCD operations.

Punjab lawmakers, on Tuesday showed discontentment with the C&W Department's performance.

The session, presided over by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, began two hours and 20 minutes behind schedule. In Question Hour, a number of treasury legislators, including Saeed Akbar Nawnai and Ahsan Raza, condemned the replies of the C&W Department as "routine and merely procedural.

Punjab Communications Minister Sohaib Bharth came to the defense of his ministry, insisting that he personally monitors all the works under way in the province. But Speaker Khan cautioned that any attempt to deceive the House would be dealt with as a serious crime.

During this time, Pakistan People's Party (PPP) members Mumtaz Chang and Shazia Abid questioned the effectiveness of the CCD. They claimed that if the department was as effective as stated, it should take its operations to the Katcha areas where criminal gangs are still active. They reported that "serious reservations remain over CCD's ongoing activities."

In other proceedings, the assembly passed a resolution in consensus to make Article 140-A of the Constitution more effective in empowering local governments. The constitutional resolution, moved under Article 144 (1), calls for the establishment of a distinct "Local Governments" chapter in the Constitution of Pakistan. It was brought in by the Punjab Local Government Caucus and co-sponsored by Ahmad Iqbal Chaudhry (PP-54) and Ali Haider Gillani (PP-211).

Moreover, six bills, including the National University of Toba Tek Singh Bill 2025, were passed by the House by majority votes. In between the session, MPA Shagufta Faisal wished Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz a happy birthday, after which Panel of Chairpersons Shaukat Raja adjourned the proceedings indefinitely.
