Pakistan and Iran discuss peace and regional stability - What happened behind closed doors?
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He received a warm welcome and a guard of honour at the Prime Minister’s House before beginning official engagements.
The meetings focused on regional stability, diplomacy and stronger bilateral cooperation. During a meeting at the presidency, President Asif Ali Zardari welcomed his Iranian counterpart on his first state visit to Pakistan since the recent conflict involving Iran and the United States. The two leaders discussed bilateral ties and a wide range of regional issues.
According to the presidency, the talks focused on regional peace and security, economic cooperation and improving connectivity between the two neighbouring countries. Both sides also exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.
President Zardari said the visit reflected the “longstanding brotherly relations between the two countries and a desire to stay together in good and bad times”. He stressed that Pakistan supports dialogue and diplomacy as the best way to address regional and global challenges.
The Pakistani president also highlighted the country’s commitment to the unity of the Muslim Ummah. At the same time, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong and friendly relations with Gulf countries.
President Zardari welcomed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran. He expressed hope that ongoing technical-level negotiations would help bring lasting peace to the region.

He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s “principled support for Iran’s peace, stability, national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity”. The statement underlined Pakistan’s continued support for peaceful solutions and regional stability.
President Zardari offered condolences over the “martyrdom of His Eminence Ali Hosseini Khamenei”. He also said Pakistan would participate in the funeral ceremonies.
President Pezeshkian thanked Pakistan for its “positive and constructive efforts in support of peace and dialogue”. He appreciated Pakistan’s support during recent difficult circumstances faced by Iran.
The Iranian leader said Tehran places great importance on relations with Pakistan. He expressed hope for expanded cooperation in political, economic, security and regional matters.
President Zardari also requested President Pezeshkian to convey his warm regards to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. The gesture highlighted the importance Islamabad places on ties with Tehran.
The Iranian delegation included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and several senior government officials. Pakistan’s side included Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other key leaders.
Later, President Pezeshkian held a separate bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Senior officials, including Asim Munir, attended the discussions before delegation-level talks were scheduled.
The visit shows that Pakistan and Iran want to keep close contact during a sensitive period in the region. Both countries appear interested in reducing tensions through dialogue.
The focus on peace, diplomacy and economic cooperation suggests that Islamabad and Tehran are looking for long-term stability. Future negotiations and follow-up meetings may determine how much progress is achieved.
