The decision was taken during a federal cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired the session, where the finance ministry briefed members on the proposed changes.
Officials told the cabinet that the State Bank of Pakistan is preparing modern and updated banknote designs. International experts have been engaged to ensure the new currency meets global standards and best practices.
According to the briefing, new designs will be launched for Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000 and Rs5,000 notes. This will mark a major update to Pakistan’s existing paper currency in circulation.
The redesigned notes will include improved security threads and advanced safety elements. These steps aim to reduce counterfeiting and increase public trust in the national currency.
The cabinet was also informed that the new banknotes will highlight Pakistan’s regional and geographical diversity. Images of important historical landmarks will give the currency a stronger national and cultural identity.

In addition to visual changes, the designs will reflect social themes such as the role of women in national development and the impact of climate change.
The federal cabinet decided that the newly formed committee will hold further discussions on the designs and related issues before the final rollout of the currency notes.
The move shows a push toward modern currency standards. Better security may help curb fake notes. Cultural themes can strengthen national identity. Final designs may take time due to detailed reviews.
