
In a letter addressed to the department, the JWP chief expressed concerns about being targeted by hostile agencies and non-state actors due to his active opposition to elements seeking to destabilize Pakistan. The letter highlighted the patriotic Baloch leader frequent visited Punjab for political and personal matters. The letter highlights increased risk to his safety during these trips.
The letter cites his outspoken stance against separatists, advocacy for Kashmiri rights and criticism of Indian involvement in Pakistan as reasons for receiving threats from both domestic and international miscreants.
After receiving the letter, Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal has forwarded it to the additional secretary of Internal Security for threat assessment.
Maham Asif Malik, the deputy secretary of internal security, has confirmed that Bugti’s case would be reviewed by the Punjab Provincial Intelligence Committee. The committee will assess the level of threat and make a decision regarding the provision of security.
The deputy secretary said that the security status was reviewed every three months and could be extended if deemed necessary. The outcome of the threat assessment would determine necessary security steps to ensure the Baloch leader’s safety during his visits in Punjab.
Nawab Shahzain Bugti is a Pakistani politician who had been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from August 2018 till August 2023. He served as Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Reconciliation and Harmony in Balochistan from 7 July 2021 to 27 March 2022.
Shahzain Bugti is grandson of Nawab Akbar Bugti who was a Pakistani politician and the Tumandar (head) of the Bugti tribe of Baloch people, and who served as the Minister of State for Interior and Governor of Balochistan Province in the country. On 26 August 2006, he died after the collapse of the cave in which he was hiding.
