Raoof Hasan’s remand extended over PTI’s alleged ‘digital terrorism’

ISLAMABAD: An Islamabad court on Tuesday extended the physical remand of PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan and eight others by three days in a case pertaining PTI’s alleged “anti-state digital campaigns”.

On Tuesday, Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Shabbir remanded Hasan in FIA’s custody for two days as the agency had sought his custody to recover social media accounts and electronic devices.

Today, nine accused including Raoof Hasan were presented before the court. The accused were represented by Ali Bukhari and Latif Khosa, while Imran Feroze Malik was the FIA prosecutor.

The FIA investigation officer (IO) sought another eight-day physical remand of the suspects. The extension in the remand was requested for “investigation, seizure of social media accounts, further analysis to ascertain their links and relations with other SMT team members of PTI throughout the globe”.

For the completion of the investigation and for the above purpose, the court allowed the request of the IO.

The sessions court allowed three-day remand “subject to pre- and post-medical examination of accused”, and directed the FIA to present the suspects again on July 28.

On Monday, a raid was conducted by the Islamabad police and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on PTI’s Central Office in a case under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca). In the raid, the PTI spokesperson was arrested.

After the arrest, the interior ministry said the raid was conducted on the information provided by PTI activist Ahmad Waqas Janjua apprehended over the weekend.

The ministry alleged in a statement that PTI is involved in “anti-state propaganda”. It added that a joint interrogation team was being formed to probe the case.

In the case, 12 individuals including Raoof Hasan had been implicated on the allegations of glorification of an offence, cyberterrorism and electronic forgery under the Peca by the FIA’s cybercrime wing.

The accused also include two women namely Farhat Khalid and Iqra Ilyas who are already judicial custody.
