ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified Member of National Assembly (MNA) Abdul Latif Chitrali from NA-1, and declared the seat officially vacant.

According to the ECP, Chitrali was disqualified under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution after being convicted in connection with the events of May 9. His conviction led to his ineligibility to remain a lawmaker.

The verdict came after the Election Commission had reserved its decision in the disqualification case earlier today. The case was heard by a five-member bench led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.

It’s worth noting that this disqualification is part of a broader crackdown. Just a day earlier, the ECP also disqualified Senator Ijaz Chaudhry, Ahmed Khan Bhachar, and Ahmed Chattha after they were declared guilty and sentenced by the courts.

The ECP has officially de-notified all three seats and is expected to announce the schedule for by-elections in the coming days.

Abdul Latif Chitrali’s disqualification is yet another blow in the post-May 9 accountability drive. The ECP’s swift action signals a stricter enforcement of constitutional provisions against convicted lawmakers. With multiple seats now vacant, the political landscape in several constituencies is set for a reshuffle, and the upcoming by-elections will be crucial in determining party standings.
