Sindh government has made strict security arrangements, with deployment of thousands of police personnel to maintain order. Visitors to the Mazar of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, Larkana, will only be allowed entry after passing through walk-through gates and metal detector checks.
Benazir Bhutto, first woman Prime Minister of Pakistan, was born on June 21, 1953, in Karachi’s Pinto Hospital. She hailed from a prominent political family in Sindh, being the daughter of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, founder of the PPP, and granddaughter of Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto. Her mother, Begum Nusrat Bhutto, was of Iranian-Kurdish descent, and Benazir was the eldest of four siblings.
On December 27, 2007, Benazir Bhutto addressed a massive public rally at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi. Her face beamed with confidence as she delivered a passionate speech, reminiscent of her father’s charisma.
After the event, as she left the venue in high spirits, a crowd of supporters surrounded her vehicle, chanting slogans. She stood up through the sunroof to wave at them. At that moment, a terrorist emerged, firing a shot that struck her in the head. A sudden explosion followed, adding to the chaos.
Benazir was rushed to the hospital, but despite efforts, she could not be saved. Amidst the grief of her supporters, Babar Awan informed the media of her tragic demise, marking a dark day in Pakistan’s history.
