(Web Desk): PML-N asks PPP to back 27th Constitutional Amendment as key changes spark major political debate.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has reached out to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), seeking its support for the approval of the 27th proposed Constitutional Amendment.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari confirmed that a PML-N delegation, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, met with President Asif Ali Zardari and himself to formally request the PPP’s backing for the amendment.

In his statement, Bilawal said the proposed 27th Amendment includes several major constitutional changes, such as the establishment of a Constitutional Court, the restoration of executive magistrates, and the authority to transfer judges. He added that the amendment also proposes changes that could remove the protection of provincial shares in the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award and amend Article 243 of the Constitution.

Bilawal further revealed that the amendment seeks to return powers related to education and population planning to the federal government, which were previously devolved to the provinces. It also aims to resolve the ongoing deadlock over appointments in the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The PPP Central Executive Committee (CEC) has been summoned to meet on November 6, following President Zardari’s return from Doha, to decide the party’s official stance on the matter.

Political observers see the proposed amendment as one of the most significant constitutional developments in recent years, potentially reshaping the balance of power between the federation and provinces. The coming days are expected to reveal whether the PPP will support or oppose the PML-N’s ambitious constitutional reform package.
