(Web Desk): The Punjab flood disaster has reached critical proportions, with the Sutlej River reaching its highest level since 1955.

The water in just a few hours inundated more than 350,000 cusecs in Kasur, putting downstream districts at grave risk. People from the affected areas have been asked by the authorities to evacuate their homes at once.

PDMA Punjab Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said that the sudden increase in water levels is mostly contributed to by heavy inflows from India. Historical levels of water were reported at Ganda Singh Wala in Kasur, with authorities willingly breaching the RR Bund embankment to protect populated areas. "Evacuations are being conducted in areas likely to be flooded," said Kathia.

The floods have reached a number of districts, with Shahdara and Balloki experiencing swelling waters, while evacuations have already begun in Okara and Sahiwal. While the Ravi floodplain is still safe for the time being, Pakpattan is in danger if water levels are sustained. Inflows at Qadirabad Headworks reached 1.077 million cusecs, flooding at least 10 villages in Mandi Bahauddin.

Authorities have identified Head Sulemanki, Head Islam and Kabirwala as high-risk zones, while inflows through Panjnad and Trimmu Barrage are being closely monitored. Officials are hopeful that downstream structures will withstand the pressure.
