
Punjab government plans to launch its much awaited electric taxi program, which would foster sustainable transportation and job creation, with in next 15 days.
The plan was formally presented during Pakistan s first-ever Transport Expo, when Punjab s Transport Minister Bilal Yasin made the news.
Under the plan, electric taxis and bikes will be provided to unemployed individuals on interest-free instalments, making it easier for low-income citizens to own vehicles and generate income.
The Transport Department Punjab claims that the project is a crucial component of Punjab s Transport 2030 Vision, which aims to modernize the public transportation system and cut carbon emissions.

In addition to the taxi scheme, Bilal Yasin revealed that Lahore will see its first tram service operational by February next year, beginning with routes on Jail Road and Main Boulevard, and later extending to Canal Road.
The government also plans to construct 41 modern depots across Punjab’s districts, launch electric buses from December 2025, and introduce 1,100 electric buses and trams by 2030.
Testing of driverless vehicles and installation of 1,000 EV charging stations are also in progress.
Punjab s commitment to transitioning 80% of its transportation network to electric mobility by 2030 is demonstrated by this program, which combines environmentally conscious policies with equitable urban growth, according to a Punjab government press release.
