LAHORE (Web Desk): Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s Skilled Punjab Initiative, the Punjab Skills Development Fund (PSDF) has equipped 1,054 transgender individuals with vocational skills through the Pehchan programme.

The Pehchan programme launched in 2024 marks Punjab’s first government-led initiative tailored specifically for the transgender community.

In high-demand areas including beauty and grooming, culinary arts, information technology, performing arts, handicrafts, and digital freelancing were completed by trainees. Essential support such as monthly stipends, travel allowances, professional toolkits, and assistance with NADRA registration and the Punjab Social Economic Registry (PSER) was also offered by the programme.

As of early September 2025, over 980 graduates have secured employment with established organisations; the remainder have embarked on entrepreneurial ventures, launching small businesses in cities including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, and Gujranwala.

PSDF CEO Ahmed Khan emphasised the programme’s broader mission: empowering a community long excluded from formal employment to seize opportunities with dignity. “We are not just training them — we are opening doors to dignity, careers, and inclusion in Punjab’s economy,” he said.

Developed in partnership with more than 18 training providers, including notable organisations such as Depilex, Khawaja Sira Society, and STEP, the initiative ensures culturally sensitive delivery by involving transgender trainers in some courses.

Sustainable livelihoods and economic self-reliance are promoted through the Pehchan programme as it aims to reach 2,200 transgender individuals over two years. This programme serves as a pioneering model for inclusive development aligned with national and global frameworks.
