After introducing electric buses in Punjab, the government is now taking another green step forward by launching Lahore’s first electric tram service. The trams will run on a dedicated route from Harbanspura to Thokar Niaz Baig, giving people a modern, clean, and energy-efficient travel option.
To make room for this new system, officials have announced some big changes to Canal Road. All underpasses along the tram route will be converted into single lanes to better manage traffic. In addition, the Jail Road underpass will be shifted from the left to the right side of the road.

The electric tram will move along the far-left lane of Canal Road to avoid interrupting regular traffic. Road sections near the tram stops will be widened to ensure safe boarding and smoother flow for other vehicles.
Transport officials say they re still finalizing some details and studying how best to keep the project practical and long-lasting. One proposal also under review is an underground tram extension between Jallo and Harbanspura, which could further boost Lahore’s transport network.
Electric trams have been widely used in many cities around the world for years, but this marks a new chapter for Pakistan’s urban transport. After the successful rollout of electric buses across major Punjab cities in 2024, this tram project builds on the government’s goal of reducing air pollution and easing road congestion. It is expected to launch in late 2025 or early 2026, though no exact date has been confirmed yet.
