Peace rally in Swat turns into tragedy
A suicide bomber targeted a peaceful anti-militancy rally in Kabal town of Swat Valley, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Sunday. The powerful explosion killed at least 14 people, including nine civilians and five police officers, while more than two dozen others were injured.
The rally was held near a police station, where residents gathered to demand peace and speak out against militancy. Protesters were chanting anti-militancy slogans when the attacker blew himself up among the crowd, causing heavy casualties.
Officials said emergency teams quickly reached the area and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals. Several wounded people were reported to be in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll could increase.
Residents demanded peace before the attack
According to witnesses, speakers at the gathering had urged the government to improve security and eliminate militancy from the area. They said that protecting citizens was the state's responsibility and called for stronger action so people could live without fear.
Residents of Swat have organised similar peace rallies in recent months as concerns over renewed militant activity have increased. Many people in the valley fear a return to the violence that once badly affected the region.
The latest attack has once again highlighted the security challenges facing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and has raised questions about how such a deadly attack was carried out during a public gathering.
President, Prime Minister condemn Swat suicide bombing
President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the bombing and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He extended condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the attack and directed authorities to provide the best possible medical treatment to those injured. He said the country would continue its fight against terrorism until it was eliminated.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also expressed grief over the incident. He offered condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a quick recovery.

Swat Valley was once heavily affected by militant violence before security operations restored government control in the area. For years, residents have worked to rebuild their lives after suffering from conflict and instability.
In recent months, concerns have grown again due to reports of renewed militant activity. Local communities have repeatedly organised public demonstrations to reject militancy and demand lasting peace across the valley.
The latest suicide attack has increased fears among residents, who say they want stronger security and long-term stability in the region.
Investigation begins as no group claims responsibility
No organisation immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, officials are investigating all possible angles behind the attack.
Authorities have previously blamed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for several similar attacks in different parts of the country. The group has been linked to a rise in violence targeting civilians, police personnel and security forces in recent years.
During a recent media briefing, DG ISPR Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said Pakistan had recorded 3,145 terrorism incidents since January. He said security forces had killed 2,084 militants during operations, while 819 people, including civilians, police officers and security personnel, had lost their lives.
The DG ISPR also said 28 suicide attacks had taken place in Pakistan since January. He added that security forces would continue operations against terrorist groups and those supporting them.
