Red Zone shutdown puts ministries, courts on work-from-home mode
The federal government has ordered most ministries and divisions located in Islamabad’s Red Zone to work from home on June 23 due to heightened security arrangements ahead of the arrival of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
According to an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division, all ministries and divisions situated in the high-security zone were directed to operate remotely for the day. However, several key government institutions remained open and continued routine operations.
The notification stated that the Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Division, Finance Division, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Law and Justice, Ministry of Commerce, and Ministry of Industries and Production would function as usual. Other important institutions, including the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Planning Division, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Senate Secretariat, and National Assembly Secretariat, also remained operational.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court announced its closure for the day due to the visit of the foreign delegation and restrictions in the Red Zone. All cause lists were cancelled, and judges, officers, and court staff were instructed to work from home. The decision was approved by Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar and notified by Registrar Muhammad Yar Walana.
Authorities said road closures could create serious difficulties for litigants, lawyers, and court employees, making regular court proceedings impractical. Similarly, the Federal Constitutional Court suspended all judicial activities at its Islamabad principal seat and cancelled the day’s cause list.
The Election Commission of Pakistan also postponed hearings scheduled for Monday, citing road blockades and travel difficulties. Several cases were removed from the hearing schedule, including a petition related to the suspension of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Senate by-elections. The hearing is now expected to take place on Tuesday.
President Pezeshkian is arriving in Islamabad on a one-day official visit, prompting extensive security measures across the federal capital.
