In a series of tweets, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recalled that Pakistan had stood by Haqqani leaders in past conflicts. “Haqqani, Pakistan stood with you heart and soul in your previous wars,” he wrote, emphasizing the long-standing cooperation between the two.
He noted that Haqqani families had lived as guests in Pakistan for generations, alongside millions of other Afghan refugees. “You earned your livelihood from our soil with your family, and were our guests,” he added.
Khawaja Asif pointed out that Pakistan and Afghanistan fought a joint war against the former Soviet Union and that Pakistan had also facilitated NATO operations after 9/11, despite repeated US allegations of aiding the Haqqani network.
He challenged the network to clarify these allegations, asking, “Whether our facilitation of you was true or false, you should tell the world.”

The minister also mentioned Pakistan’s role in mediating internal Haqqani conflicts, including taking parties to Mecca for reconciliation, emphasizing that Pakistan had hosted three generations of the network.
Khawaja Asif questioned Afghanistan’s reward for Pakistan’s support, saying the country had sheltered murderers who had blood on their hands. “Be an ally of those who stain our streets with blood,” he said.
He recalled direct meetings in Kabul, where he urged the network not to assist adversaries of Pakistan. “You requested funds; we were ready to give, but there was no guarantee,” he said.
Referring to the revered elder after whom the network is named, Khawaja Asif added, “The respect associated with the name Haqqani comes from a great elder. Honor this name; we ask nothing from you.”

The minister concluded by underlining Pakistan’s policy of safeguarding its territory and neutrality: “Our enemies may live in your homes, but do not collectively play the role of our enemy. Do not allow your land to be used against us.”
He stressed traditional hospitality, culture, and religious teachings: “Tradition, culture, and religion teach us to wish well for the household that gives shelter. Allahu Akbar.”
