Noreen Niazi gets relief as LHC blocks arrest in NCCIA case

The Lahore High Court has granted one-week protective bail to Noreen Niazi, the sister of the PTI founder, in a case registered by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency.

The court also ordered authorities not to arrest her during the protective bail period.

Noreen Niazi must now appear before the relevant trial court within one week to seek regular bail in the case.

The court’s order gives her temporary legal protection while allowing her to approach the court that has jurisdiction over the case.

Why Noreen Niazi approached the LHC

Noreen Niazi approached the Lahore High Court after receiving notices from the NCCIA.

Her lawyer told the court that the agency had registered a case against her under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

The petition said Niazi intended to seek bail from the competent trial court. However, she feared that authorities could arrest her before she had the opportunity to approach that court.

Her legal team therefore requested protective bail from the Lahore High Court.

The purpose of such protection is to give a person time to reach the appropriate court without facing immediate arrest during that period.

The LHC accepted the request for limited protection and directed Niazi to approach the relevant trial court within one week.

What does the NCCIA case alleg?

According to the FIR cited in the case, the NCCIA registered the case under PECA and relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The FIR contains allegations related to statements Niazi allegedly made during a podcast interview.

Investigators have accused her of making what they described as false allegations against state institutions.

The FIR further alleges that she made accusations against the armed forces that authorities considered baseless and capable of creating fear or panic.

The case also concerns Niazi’s alleged social media activity.

Social media allegations form part of case

According to the FIR, investigators have accused Noreen Niazi of sharing provocative and threatening material on social media.

The authorities have also described the alleged activity as part of a coordinated propaganda campaign targeting state and security institutions.

The allegations are serious because Pakistan’s cybercrime laws cover various forms of online activity, depending on the specific content and circumstances involved.

However, the filing of an FIR does not by itself establish guilt.

What the one-week bail means
