(Web Desk): An Islamabad district and sessions court on Wednesday acquitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Senator Azam Swati in two cases related to his controversial tweets.
The hearing was conducted by Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka, who announced the reserved verdict, dismissing the cases filed under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
In his decision, Judge Majoka stated that the evidence presented by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) was insufficient to support the charges.
Following the verdict, PTI leaders welcomed the judgment, calling it a victory for justice, and maintained that the cases against Azam Swati were politically motivated and baseless.
Swati was arrested by the FIA’s Cyber Crime Wing on October 13, 2022, after he posted what authorities described as hateful and threatening tweets targeting the then–army chief, judiciary, and other state institutions.
The cases were initially registered in November 2022 over tweets deemed offensive toward the military leadership. After the establishment of the National Cybercrime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in April 2025, the cases were transferred to the new body for further proceedings.
According to the FIA, Swati’s social media posts were part of a “malicious campaign” aimed at creating unrest and discrediting state institutions for “ulterior motives.”
