(Web Desk): Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Shehbaz announced a Rs100 per litre relief scheme for bikes, autos and cars amid rising oil prices.

Relief scheme announced for small vehicles

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a relief scheme for motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqis and vehicles up to 800cc. The scheme aims to reduce the impact of rising global oil prices on the public.

“The government is fully aware of the burden being placed on the public due to the increase in oil prices. In this hour of difficulty, we will not leave the public alone,” the prime minister said.

Monthly fuel quota set for vehicle owners

Under the scheme, owners of two- and three-wheeled vehicles will receive Rs100 per litre in relief on a monthly quota of 20 litres. Owners of vehicles up to 800cc will receive the same relief on a monthly quota of 30 litres.

The scheme will begin in Islamabad at midnight between Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15. In other parts of the country, including Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, the relief will start at midnight between Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 17.

Registration begins as oil prices rise

Registration for the scheme has started, while details of the process will be shared through a public awareness campaign. The prime minister thanked provincial governments for helping provide information about motorcycles, rickshaws and small vehicles.

The announcement comes after a fresh increase in fuel prices. Petrol is now priced at Rs375.82 per litre, while high-speed diesel costs Rs403.32 per litre.

Middle East tensions push fuel prices higher

Renewed conflict in the Middle East has disrupted major oil supply routes and increased global fuel prices. The Strait of Hormuz remains affected by the US-Iran war, while the Bab al-Mandab route also faces threats from Houthi rebels.

The government currently collects Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that oil supply problems may continue into 2027 if the conflict delays the return of normal regional oil flows.

Government changes fuel price policy

In July, the government announced that fuel prices would be reviewed daily because of changes in international oil prices. Before that, prices had been revised weekly since early March.

The government had also announced targeted subsidised fuel relief in April. Diesel prices have declined from a record Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, while petrol had reached a peak of Rs458.41 per litre on the same day.

The new scheme may provide temporary support to people who depend on motorcycles, rickshaws and small cars. However, its impact will depend on the registration process, fuel quota and continued changes in international oil prices.
