(WebDesk) The Punjab government has attributed a 43 per cent increase in animal exports to its livestock card scheme, citing district-level figures from across the province.

Government Reports Growth In Exports

The Punjab government has reported a 43 per cent increase in animal exports and linked the rise to its livestock card scheme, according to a report published on October 19.

The scheme is intended to support livestock-related economic activity, while the reported export figures point to the importance of animal farming in the province's rural economy.

District-level figures cited in the report included 20,000 animals from Lahore, 24,297 from Bahawalpur, 12,529 from Faisalabad, 21,000 from Gujranwala and Gujrat, and 27,000 from Multan.

Sargodha accounted for 22,000 animals, while 2,661 were reported from Sahiwal. These figures illustrate the geographical spread of livestock-related activity across Punjab.

Livestock Sector Supports Rural Communities

Livestock farming provides income for many rural households and contributes to agricultural production and related businesses. Support programmes can potentially help farmers manage costs and maintain commercial activity, depending on their eligibility requirements and implementation.

Animal exports also depend on factors such as demand in overseas markets, transportation, veterinary certification and compliance with import requirements in destination countries.

While the provincial government has associated the reported increase with the livestock card scheme, the available report did not independently establish how much of the growth was directly attributable to the programme.

Further Data Needed To Assess Impact

A detailed evaluation would require information about the scheme's beneficiaries, the period covered by the export figures and comparisons with earlier export volumes.

Such data would help determine whether the programme is delivering sustained gains for livestock farmers and whether similar support measures could benefit other agricultural sectors.
