(Web Desk): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced the local government elections date in Punjab.

As per ECP notification, the local government elections will be held in first week of December 2025. The decision came on Wednesday during a hearing led by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. A four-member ECP bench reviewed the long-standing delays in Punjab’s local body elections.

The polls will be conducted under the 2022 Local Government Act using either electronic voting machines (EVMs) or ballot papers. The ECP directed that the delimitation process be completed within two to two-and-a-half months. Work has already begun.

The ECP criticized Punjab’s repeated postponements, stating that the province’s local bodies completed their tenure on December 31, 2021, but elections have been delayed for three years and nine months. In that time, Punjab amended its local government law five times, with a sixth amendment in progress.

ECP officials pointed out that local elections have been held in Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and cantonment boards—leaving Punjab behind. The Supreme Court has already warned of legal consequences for further delays.

CEC Raja said the delay was an embarrassment and urged the government to either hold elections or amend the Constitution if it does not want to proceed. The Punjab government claimed the new bill was delayed due to floods and lack of assembly sessions.
