
October 8 holiday is announced to celebrate the ‘Day of Resilience and Renewal of Commitment’, in remembrance of the victims and survivors of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.
According to a notification issued by the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) of Azad Kashmir, all public offices, schools, and institutions will remain closed on Wednesday. The day will be dedicated to honoring those who lost their lives and to reaffirming the nation’s collective resolve to support ongoing rehabilitation and rebuilding efforts.
The October 8, 2005 earthquake remains one of the deadliest disasters in the region’s history. It caused catastrophic destruction across Kashmir and northern Pakistan, flattening entire towns and villages. Thousands of homes, schools, and government buildings were reduced to rubble, and tens of thousands of people, including many children, tragically lost their lives.

The city of Bagh was completely devastated, while Muzaffarabad and surrounding areas also suffered extensive damage.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, various memorial events and community activities will be held tomorrow across Azad Kashmir. Citizens will also organize private prayers and remembrance ceremonies for their loved ones.
Officials said the observance aims not only to honor the departed but also to renew Pakistan’s commitment to resilience, preparedness, and rebuilding efforts in the face of natural disasters.
