DERA ISMAIL KHAN (Web Desk): The Agricultural University of Dera Ismail Khan has announced a holiday on the 1st of Muharram, following special instructions from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

The university administration issued an official notification confirming that all academic and administrative operations will remain suspended on this day. The decision was taken to honor the sacred beginning of Muharram-ul-Haram, the first month of the Islamic calendar — a time of deep spiritual significance for Muslims around the world.

According to the notification, issued with the approval of the Vice Chancellor, the security staff will remain on duty as per regular schedule to maintain the safety and security of the campus premises during the holiday.

The university administration explained that the holiday aims to give students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to observe the day with religious harmony, peace, and respect, reflecting on the historical and spiritual importance of Muharram. It is also intended to allow them to participate in religious gatherings, prayers, and special Muharram events without academic pressure.

The government’s directive is part of a broader initiative to promote interfaith unity and religious tolerance across institutions in the province. This marks a significant step in aligning official policy with the religious sentiments of the population, especially during the start of the Islamic New Year.

This decision highlights how religious observances continue to shape institutional calendars in Pakistan. By officially recognizing Muharram’s spiritual weight, the government not only facilitates worship but also fosters a culture of mutual respect and reflection. The move is likely to be well-received by the public, especially in regions where religious traditions deeply influence daily life. It also underscores the university’s commitment to promoting harmony and observance of Islamic values among students and faculty alike.
