LAHORE (Web Desk): Punjab faces a shortage of Class 11 and 12 textbooks just days before educational institutions reopen on August 24, raising concerns about timely book supplies.

Higher secondary educational institutions are scheduled to reopen on August 24, leaving only a few days to resolve the shortage.

The shortage has raised concerns among families who want students to begin their studies without delays. Several textbooks are reportedly difficult to find in the market, while some Class 12 books are currently unavailable.

Limited supply causes shortage

According to sources, the shortage is linked to the limited number of textbooks initially supplied to the market. Publishers were reportedly allocated books equal to only around 30% of total market demand during the first phase.

Around 30% of the allocated stock has already been sold, further reducing the availability of books at shops. The limited supply has created difficulties for students trying to purchase textbooks before classes begin.

Class 11 books partly available

Booksellers said some Class 11 textbooks are currently available in the market. However, supplies remain limited and may not be enough to meet demand from students across Punjab.

The situation is more difficult for Class 12 students, as books for the higher class are reportedly not currently available in the market. Parents are concerned that students may have to attend classes without the required textbooks if supplies do not arrive soon.

Additional textbooks allocated

Publishers have now received additional textbook allocations based on market demand. The move is aimed at increasing supplies and meeting students’ needs before educational institutions reopen.

However, booksellers say the availability of the new stock remains a major concern. The short time between the additional allocation and the reopening of colleges has added pressure on publishers, printers and distributors.

Education Department gives assurance

The Punjab Education Department has said that printing of the required textbooks is currently underway. Officials expect the newly printed books to reach the market within one to two days.

The department has also assured parents and students that 100% of the required textbooks will be available in the market by August 24. The assurance is aimed at easing concerns about a possible disruption at the start of the academic year.

Parents and students remain worried

Despite the government’s assurance, parents remain concerned about whether the books will reach shops on time. Many families are already preparing for the new academic session and want students to have all the necessary study materials before classes begin.

A delay in textbook supplies could make it difficult for students to follow lessons from the first day. Students preparing for Class 11 and 12 examinations may be particularly concerned because textbooks are an important part of their academic preparation.

Why timely textbook supply matters

Textbooks are among the most important resources for students beginning a new academic year. If books are not available when classes start, students may have difficulty keeping up with classroom lessons and completing assignments.

Teachers could also face challenges if a significant number of students do not have the required textbooks. Ensuring a steady supply before August 24 would therefore help students and educational institutions begin the academic year smoothly.
