The Punjab government, under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, is reviewing a comprehensive energy-saving policy as the province faces a growing energy crisis driven by global fuel disruptions.
Officials say the proposed measures aim to reduce electricity and fuel consumption, stabilize supply, and ensure efficient use of limited resources amid rising demand.
School Holidays Likely Extended Till April 15
One of the most significant proposals under consideration is the extension of school, college, and university holidays until April 15.
Currently, educational institutions are closed until March 31, but authorities believe an extension—along with a hybrid learning system (online + physical classes)—could:
- Reduce electricity usage in institutions
- Cut fuel consumption linked to daily commuting
- Help manage peak energy demand
If approved, academic activities may resume after mid-April.
Fuel Rationing Plan and Controlled Distribution
To tackle fuel shortages, the Energy Department has proposed introducing a fuel rationing system similar to federal models.
Key features may include:
- Coupon-based or digital system for petrol and diesel
- Controlled and fair distribution of fuel
- Limiting fuel supply to vehicles on specific days
These measures aim to curb excessive fuel consumption and ensure transparent allocation of limited resources.

Work-from-Home and Travel Restrictions
Authorities are also considering stricter work-from-home policies for private organizations to reduce energy usage.
Additional steps include:
- Discouraging unnecessary travel
- Reducing office electricity consumption
- Lowering fuel demand across urban centers
Ban on Events and Promotion of Public Transport
To further conserve energy, the government may impose:
- A complete ban on non-essential events
- Expansion of metro and bus services
- Encouragement of public transport usage
These measures are expected to ease pressure on fuel consumption and improve urban mobility.
Market Timings, Lighting Restrictions Under Review
The proposed policy also includes strict measures to cut electricity usage:
- Shutdown of LED billboards and decorative lighting
- Operating streetlights in reduced mode after 10 PM
- Further restriction of market operating hours
Officials believe these steps will significantly reduce unnecessary power consumption across cities.
Global Fuel Crisis Impacting Punjab
The policy review comes as Pakistan faces rising petroleum prices and supply constraints, largely due to disruptions in global oil routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz amid Middle East tensions.
These disruptions have intensified the need for urgent energy conservation measures at the provincial level.
Government’s Goal: Sustainable Energy Management
Authorities emphasize that the primary objective is to:
- Manage the ongoing energy crisis
- Ensure efficient resource utilization
- Maintain long-term sustainability
Final decisions are expected after reviewing all proposals and their potential impact on daily life.
