Simple tips to stop pasta from sticking together
Keep the Water Boiling and Stir Often
Experts say pasta should always be cooked in fast-boiling, salted water. However, the most important step is stirring the pasta regularly after adding it to the pot.
Some pasta shapes, especially hollow ones like Orecchiette, easily stick together if left untouched. Chefs advise adding the pasta slowly into the water instead of dumping it all in at once.
After adding the pasta, stir immediately with a spoon and continue stirring every minute to stop pieces from clumping together.
Oil Is Not Necessary
Many people add oil to pasta water, but cooking experts say it does not really prevent sticking. They explain that even with oil, pasta can still clump if it is not stirred properly.
Avoid Overcrowding and Overcooking
Experts also recommend checking dry pasta before cooking to make sure pieces are not already tangled in the packet.
Once cooked, pasta should be lifted out gently with a slotted spoon or sieve instead of pouring everything into one colander. This helps prevent steam and starch from making the pasta sticky.
For pasta salads, chefs suggest cooking pasta only until “al dente,” meaning slightly firm. Overcooked pasta releases more starch and becomes stickier.

Give Pasta Space
Cooking specialists say pasta needs enough space to move freely both in the pot and after cooking. Keeping the pasta moving and avoiding overcrowding are the best ways to stop sticking.
