Do lungs really regenerate after quitting smoking? Experts explain the truth
According to Dr Charlotte Dean, head of the Lung Development and Disease Group at Imperial College London, it was once believed that lungs could not repair themselves. However, new research shows that they can recover to a significant extent after smoking stops.
Lungs Can Heal Themselves
Dr Dean explains that lungs are designed to handle damage from pollution, infections, and harmful particles. Because breathing is essential for survival, the lungs have developed a natural ability to repair themselves over time.
When a person quits smoking, the lungs begin to clear out harmful substances and improve their function. This can lead to better breathing and overall lung health.
Not All Damage Can Be Reversed
However, experts warn that quitting smoking does not fully remove all risks. Some smokers may have long-term damage, including genetic changes or tissue scarring. These changes can increase the risk of serious diseases such as cancer and may affect lung health later in life.
Dr Dean also says that the body’s ability to repair itself decreases with age, meaning recovery may be slower or less effective in older individuals.
