From hip-hop to Islam: How Khalila Lister built a global speaking empire
A glamorous life that felt empty
Khalila Lister once lived in the glamorous world of hip-hop, surrounded by celebrities, luxury and exclusive parties. Today, she is the CEO of Power of Voice Academy, where she helps people build confidence and become powerful public speakers.
Khalila said that despite her successful lifestyle, she always felt something was missing. She explained that fame, money and parties could not fill the emptiness she felt inside.
Embracing Islam changed everything
Her life changed after she embraced Islam. She described her acceptance of the faith as a turning point that gave her a new purpose and inspired her to completely change her lifestyle and values.
Leaving the entertainment industry was not easy for her. She said she struggled to balance her past with her new identity while adapting to modest clothing, including wearing the hijab.
Overcoming personal struggles
Soon after, Khalila faced another difficult challenge when she entered an abusive relationship. She said those years were among the darkest of her life, but her faith helped her remain hopeful.
In 2020, she left the abusive relationship and started a new chapter as a single mother of four children. She worked hard to rebuild her life and eventually founded Power of Voice Academy, which she describes as the world’s first public speaking academy for Muslims.
Building a global public speaking academy
Through her academy, Khalila has trained many people to become confident speakers. She says her mission is to help others discover their voices and speak on respected platforms, including TEDx events.
Khalila also shared that she once wore the niqab and later chose to wear the hijab without covering her face. She said personal growth continues throughout life, but her values and message have remained unchanged.
International recognition
She has received several international honours, including recognition among the Top 100 Global Women Entrepreneurs and the Top 50 Most Influential Muslims in Europe in both 2023 and 2024. Khalila believes these achievements represent every woman who remains true to her beliefs despite challenges.
Her message to professionals
She encourages professionals and entrepreneurs to use their personal stories, speak with confidence and never compromise their values for success. According to Khalila, a person’s voice can open new opportunities and inspire positive change.
