Why Meryl Streep said ‘No’ to The Devil Wears Prada at first
Speaking in a recent interview alongside co-stars Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep explained that she initially rejected the offer despite believing the film would be a success.
She shared that after reading the script, she felt confident that The Devil Wears Prada had strong potential and could become a major hit. However, she was not satisfied with the first offer made to her and decided to refuse it.
“I read the script — the script was great. They called me up, and they made an offer, and I said ‘No. I’m not going to do it,’” she recalled during the interview.
Later, Meryl Streep decided to negotiate and asked for a much higher salary. To her surprise, the producers quickly agreed to her demand, which changed her decision.

The actress admitted that at that stage of her life, she had begun to understand her value in the industry and felt confident enough to stand firm on her expectations.
She also revealed that she believed The Devil Wears Prada would succeed and felt that her involvement was important for the project.
The film eventually became a global success, and her portrayal of Miranda Priestly remains one of the most memorable performances in Hollywood.
