Marvel defends Doctor Doom’s debut as fans question ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Kevin Feige dismissed claims that Doctor Doom is being introduced too quickly.
The Marvel Studios president compared the character’s arrival to Thanos, saying the famous villain also had only brief appearances before becoming the main antagonist in Avengers: Infinity War.
According to Kevin Feige, Avengers: Doomsday will gradually explain Doctor Doom’s background, goals and motivations so both longtime comic readers and new audiences can understand the character.
Fans remain unconvinced
Many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe disagree with the comparison.
They argue that although Thanos had limited screen time, his influence was felt throughout multiple films because of the Infinity Stones and several connected storylines.
By contrast, Doctor Doom has not appeared or been mentioned during the Multiverse Saga, making his sudden arrival feel unexpected.
Some fans also believe changes to Marvel’s long-term plans after Kang the Conqueror left the spotlight have forced Avengers: Doomsday to quickly establish a new central villain.

New footage shown at Comic-Con
During Comic-Con, Marvel Studios showcased fresh footage from Avengers: Doomsday featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on December 18, 2026 and is expected to shape the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Who is Doctor Doom?
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Doctor Doom first appeared in The Fantastic Four #5 in 1962.
His real name is Victor Von Doom, the ruler of Latveria and one of Marvel’s most powerful villains.
The character combines advanced technology with powerful magic and has remained the longtime enemy of the Fantastic Four.
