First preview of ‘The Mad King’ from ‘Game of Thrones’ cancelled just hours before debut

The first public preview of The Mad King was scheduled to take place at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

However, the Royal Shakespeare Company announced the cancellation shortly before the performance and apologized to ticket holders, leaving many fans surprised.

Theatre company explains the reason

In its official statement, the Royal Shakespeare Company said cancelling a performance is never an easy decision and is only made after considering every possible option.

The company explained that The Mad King is a large-scale production and unexpected delays during preparation meant the creative team needed more time before presenting the Game of Thrones stage play to audiences.

Full refunds for ticket holders

The Royal Shakespeare Company confirmed that everyone who purchased tickets for the cancelled preview will automatically receive a full refund.

The company also said the official opening night on August 8 is still expected to go ahead as planned.

The next preview performance is likely to take place on July 28, while the production will continue until September 5, 2026.

A story set before ‘Game of Thrones’

Based on the works of George R. R. Martin, the Game of Thrones stage play tells a story set decades before the events of Game of Thrones.

The story follows the famous Harrenhal Tournament before Robert’s Rebellion and introduces several important characters who have never appeared in the television series.
