Web Desk: Andrew Garfield has faced backlash after telling billionaires they should be “scared sh–less” while promoting his upcoming film The Uprising.

Garfield sends blunt message

Andrew Garfield has found himself at the centre of an online debate after making a sharp comment about billionaires.

The actor was speaking about his upcoming historical action drama, The Uprising, when he shared what he hoped audiences would take away from the film.

During a question-and-answer session at a screening in Los Angeles, the 43-year-old actor said he wanted the movie to make people think about the struggles of ordinary people.

Garfield said he hoped the film would create an awakening and allow viewers to see their own struggles reflected in the experiences of people from another time.

‘Scared sh–less’ comment causes reaction

While discussing the message of the film, Andrew Garfield turned his attention to wealthy viewers.

“And I hope that if any billionaires watch it, they’re scared sh–less,” Garfield said.

The comment quickly spread online and became a major talking point during the film’s promotional campaign.

The Andrew Garfield backlash came from users who questioned whether the actor was in a position to criticise billionaires given his own success in Hollywood.

Some critics argued that his comments appeared contradictory because major Hollywood productions involve wealthy investors, producers and executives.

Critics accuse actor of hypocrisy

One of the strongest reactions came from Spencer Pratt, a former candidate for mayor in Los Angeles.

“You mean…like the billionaires who greenlight your movies and stroke all your multi-million dollar paychecks? Or they good?” Pratt wrote.

He also referred to Garfield’s reported payment for portraying billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial.

“Ironically, Garfield just got paid like $5M for playing billionaire Sam Altman in Artificial,” he added.

Another critic, Substack columnist John William Sherrod, also questioned the actor’s remarks.

“Hilarious that world-famous, multi, multi millionaire Andrew Garfield is cosplaying as a put upon member of the working class,” Sherrod wrote.

The comments added fuel to the growing Andrew Garfield controversy online.

What is ‘The Uprising’ about?

The controversy comes as The Uprising prepares to reach audiences.

Directed by Paul Greengrass, the historical drama focuses on England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt.

The story explores the struggles of ordinary people during a period of major social and political unrest.

Garfield appears to believe the historical story still has meaning for modern audiences.

His comments suggest he hopes viewers will connect the experiences of the characters with challenges faced by people today.

Debate continues online

The Andrew Garfield comments have divided social media users.

Some people criticised the actor for speaking against wealthy people while working in a highly paid industry.

Others defended the message behind the film and argued that being successful does not prevent someone from discussing inequality and working-class struggles.

For now, the billionaire warning has become one of the most talked-about moments from The Uprising promotion.
