Was “3 Idiots” really inspired by Sonam Wangchuk? Aamir Khan finally reveals the truth
Aamir Khan has firmly rejected the claim that his famous character Rancho, also known as Phunsukh Wangdu, in the blockbuster film “3 Idiots” was based on education reformer and social activist Sonam Wangchuk.
Speaking during a special screening of “Lagaan” at the London Indian Film Festival, Aamir said the belief was simply a misunderstanding. He explained that when “3 Idiots” was being made, neither he, director Rajkumar Hirani, nor writer Abhijat Joshi even knew who Sonam Wangchuk was.
Aamir added that Sonam Wangchuk has done remarkable work and deserves respect, but he said there is no need to spread false stories to honor him. According to Aamir, the film’s character was not created from Sonam’s life or experiences.

The actor also expressed concern over Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike. He said many people are worried about his health and hope he ends his protest soon.
Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi since June 28. He is protesting over education reforms and alleged irregularities in the education system.
The debate gained attention after actor Omi Vaidya, who played Chatur Ramalingam in “3 Idiots,” posted on social media that Phunsukh Wangdu’s character was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk. He also urged people to support the activist.
Aamir Khan’s statement has now settled a long-running debate among fans. His clarification separates the film’s fictional story from real-life personalities while still recognizing Sonam Wangchuk’s contributions.
