Petrol and diesel relief extended as fuel excise cut to continue
The Australian government has announced an extension of fuel excise relief for one more month to help people struggling with rising living costs. The move aims to reduce the burden of high petrol and diesel prices on the public.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government will continue the discount on petrol and diesel to protect citizens from increasing fuel prices. He stressed that households are under pressure due to rising costs of food, electricity, and transport.
Under the decision, a reduction of 16 cents per litre on petrol and diesel will remain in effect for another month. Officials estimate that this relief can save around AUD11 per full fuel tank for an average driver.
The government said the fuel excise relief is a temporary but necessary step. It is designed to protect consumers from sudden changes in global oil prices.
Earlier, similar relief measures had been introduced, including tax reductions on fuel, which were set to expire at the end of June. However, the government has now extended them for an additional month.
Authorities explained that tensions in the Middle East and ongoing global conflicts have disrupted supply chains. This disruption has caused unusual increases in international oil prices.

Since Australia relies heavily on imported fuel, the impact of global price changes is strongly felt in the local market. This has increased pressure on household budgets across the country.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government will continue practical steps to reduce inflation pressure. He added that every possible effort will be made to provide relief to citizens.
This extension gives short-term relief to Australian drivers facing high fuel costs. It helps reduce daily travel expenses slightly.
However, the relief is temporary and depends on global oil market stability. Long-term price control will require broader energy and economic strategies.
