ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) Contrary to the global market trends, the petrol price is expected to increase for the next fortnight, beginning March 1.

Sources state the ex-depot price of petrol is expected to hike by Rs4 to Rs4.50 per liter. However, the prices of high-speed diesel (HSD) and kerosene may witness a slight drop of less than Rs1 per litre.

The proposed hike in petrol prices comes amid a slight uptick in international rates and a depreciation of the rupee against the US dollar.

Currently, the petrol price is Rs256.13 per litre, while price of HSD is Rs263.95 per litre. Due to supply constraints, kerosene oil is being sold at Rs300 to Rs350 per litre in various areas, despite the official price of kerosene is Rs171.65 per litre.

It is important to note that the government collects around Rs76 per litre in taxes on petrol and HSD, including a Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) of Rs60 per litre. Although the there is no General Sales Tax (GST), the authorities impose an additional customs duty of Rs16 per liter on both locally refined and imported products.
