PIA privatization enters final stage, when will new management take charge?
Talking to Suno News, the Privatization Commission shared fresh details regarding the transfer of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to the private sector. Officials say the process has made significant progress and is now moving toward its final stages.
According to a spokesperson for the Privatization Commission, all major regulatory requirements have been completed. Necessary domestic and international approvals, no-objection certificates and other mandatory consents have already been secured.
The spokesperson said the Share Purchase and Subscription Agreement has been signed with the successful bidder. This development is considered an important milestone in the privatization process.

The Privatization Commission stated that management control will be handed over to the Arif Habib-led consortium once the initial closing requirements are fulfilled. Preparations are currently underway to complete the process within the planned timeline.
According to the commission, a payment of Rs85 billion is expected from the Arif Habib consortium at the time of the first closing. The amount is likely to be paid by the end of June as part of the agreed transaction structure.
Officials added that the remaining amount will be deposited by the buyer in accordance with the terms and conditions of the agreement. The payment schedule has been designed under the approved privatization framework.
The Privatization Commission said both parties are currently working to complete the first financial closing by the end of June 2026. Once completed, the transfer of shares and management authority will move forward.
Officials believe the completion of these steps will formally mark the beginning of private-sector management at the national airline. The development is being closely watched by aviation stakeholders and investors.
PIA’s privatization has remained one of the most discussed economic reforms in recent years. Supporters believe private-sector management could help improve efficiency, service quality and financial performance.
At the same time, the process continues to attract attention because of its impact on employees, operations and the future direction of the national carrier. Further developments are expected as the handover date approaches.
The privatization process appears to be moving closer to completion after securing key approvals and agreements. The planned transfer of management control could mark a major turning point for PIA.
Much attention will now focus on how the new management handles the airline’s operations. The coming months may determine whether the privatization delivers the improvements many stakeholders expect.
