Binance’s $6.3 billion hack questions crypto insurance protection
The incident has drawn attention to crypto insurance and the financial protection available to companies when hackers steal digital currencies. However, insurance coverage is not guaranteed and depends on how digital assets are stored, how the attack happens and what the policy covers.
What is digital asset insurance?
Digital asset insurance refers to policies that protect cryptocurrency exchanges, digital asset custodians and other crypto businesses against financial losses. These policies can cover cryptocurrency theft, cyberattacks, technical failures and other business-related risks.
Unlike traditional insurance, crypto insurance is designed to deal with risks linked to blockchain technology. These include stolen private keys, hacked digital wallets, security weaknesses in smart contracts and problems with the storage of digital assets.
According to Data Bridge Market Research, the global crypto insurance market was valued at $9.37 billion in 2025. The market is projected to reach $184.98 billion by 2033 as more institutions adopt cryptocurrencies and cyberattacks become a growing concern.
What types of crypto insurance are available?
Crypto businesses can purchase different types of insurance depending on the risks they face. Each policy covers a specific area of business operations and financial losses.
Crime insurance can protect companies against digital asset theft, fraud and scams. Cyber liability insurance covers certain losses linked to hacking, security breaches and responses to cyber incidents.
Other policies include errors and omissions insurance, which can cover certain claims related to software errors and service failures. Smart contract-related risks may also receive protection under specific policies.
Directors and officers insurance can protect company executives against certain legal claims linked to their business decisions. Technology liability insurance can also cover risks faced by companies providing digital infrastructure and services.
Why is crypto insurance difficult to obtain?
Insurance companies remain cautious about the cryptocurrency industry because digital asset prices can change rapidly and regulations are limited in many markets. These factors make it difficult for insurers to calculate risks and decide how much coverage they should provide.
Despite these challenges, demand for protection is increasing as cryptocurrency businesses grow and cyberattacks become more common. The market remains specialised, with much of the coverage provided by specialist insurers operating in the Lloyd’s market and Bermuda.
How are hacking losses covered?
When hackers steal cryptocurrency from an exchange, the company may use several sources to cover the financial losses. These can include insurance payments, its own money and emergency funds set aside to compensate affected customers.
However, the amount an insurer pays depends on the terms of the policy. Coverage limits, deductibles and exclusions determine how much of the loss can be recovered.
If the stolen amount is higher than the insurance coverage, the exchange must use its own financial resources or other recovery arrangements to meet its responsibilities. This means having insurance does not guarantee that every customer will receive full compensation after a major hacking attack.
The Binance incident highlights the financial risks facing cryptocurrency exchanges and their customers. Insurance can reduce the damage caused by hacking, but it cannot guarantee complete protection.
Crypto companies need strong security systems, safe digital asset storage and sufficient financial reserves. Customers should also understand that insurance policies may not cover every type of loss.
