2,000+ electric cars arrive in Pakistan - How RoRo shipping benefits buyers?
The development marks a major change in how vehicles are transported and handled at Pakistani ports.
The vessel MV Grande Shanghai reached Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited at Karachi Port carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles. Instead of being lifted by cranes, the vehicles were driven directly off the ship using built-in ramps.
This method is known as roll-on/roll-off, or RoRo shipping, and is widely used around the world. It allows cars, trucks and other wheeled cargo to be loaded and unloaded more quickly and efficiently.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the arrival as an important milestone for Pakistan’s maritime industry. He said the move reflects ongoing efforts to modernize port operations and bring them closer to international standards.
According to the minister, approval for RoRo imports of electric vehicles was granted during a maritime committee meeting last month. He said the new service is expected to improve trade operations and strengthen Pakistan’s logistics network.
Officials believe the introduction of RoRo shipping could reduce cargo handling time and improve overall port efficiency. The system may also lower operational costs and make vehicle imports smoother in the future.
The shipment is also being viewed as a positive step for Pakistan’s connection with global clean transportation and sustainable mobility supply chains. Growing imports of electric vehicles could support the country’s transition toward cleaner transport options.

The latest development comes as Pakistan continues efforts to upgrade its ports and maritime infrastructure. Recent improvements have focused on increasing efficiency, boosting trade capacity and enhancing connectivity with international shipping routes.
Earlier, Port Qasim handled the largest liquefied natural gas cargo in its history during difficult monsoon conditions. Officials called that operation another significant achievement for Pakistan’s maritime and energy sectors.
The arrival of the first RoRo vessel could make future vehicle imports faster and more efficient. It also signals growing interest in electric vehicles and modern logistics systems. If expanded further, the new shipping method may strengthen Pakistan’s trade and transport infrastructure.
