(Web Desk): BYD, the Chinese electric car giant, has unveiled plans to introduce its first locally assembled electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in Pakistan by July or August 2026.

Danish Khaliq, Vice President of Sales and Strategy at BYD Pakistan, confirmed that construction of the assembly plant—built in partnership with Mega Motor Company, a subsidiary of Hub Power (HUBCO)—began near Karachi in April. The facility will initially operate on a double shift and target an annual production capacity of 25,000 units.

While many non-electric components will be produced locally, early models will be assembled using imported parts. Pakistan s domestic market is the focus of the rollout; it also focuses on possible exports to right-hand drive countries in the region depending on costs and demand.

BYD began selling imported EVs in Pakistan in March 2025. Although the company did not disclose exact sales figures, Khaliq noted that initial sales exceeded targets by 30%. The local EV and plug-in hybrid market, which stood at roughly 1,000 units in 2024, is projected to grow three to four times in 2025. BYD s aim is to secure a 30–35% market share in the expanding sector.

Additionally, as per the HUBCO filing, a profit of approximately PKR 444 million (about $1.56 million) in Q1 2025 was posted by BYD.

For Pakistanis, the launch of a locally assembled EV could be transformative—offering more affordable options, boosting local components production, and cutting reliance on imports. The groundwork is being laid for wider EV adoption as government incentives such as a 45% reduction in electricity tariffs for EV charging, and BYD’s planned expansion of charging infrastructure help make it into a reality.

The feasibility of plug-in hybrid models—given limited public charging infrastructure—is also seen as particularly fitting for Pakistan’s current conditions. BYD’s upcoming Shark 6 pickup truck launch, along with competition from PHEV SUVs like MG and Haval, signals a budding NEV market that could redefine the local auto industry.
