ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): FBR has opened online income tax return filing for 2026, with taxpayers required to submit complete income and expense details by September 30.

The Federal Board of Revenue has announced that taxpayers can begin submitting their annual income tax returns online from July 27. The filing process covers annual income tax returns for the relevant tax year. The deadline for submitting returns is September 30, 2026.

FBR has advised taxpayers to provide complete and accurate information about their income and expenses when filing their returns. The instructions are important because the tax authority has legal powers to examine returns submitted by taxpayers under the Income Tax Ordinance.

Sources said FBR has access to different databases that can help it review information provided in tax returns. This access can give the tax authority information about a taxpayer’s property, bank accounts, vehicles, travel and spending patterns.

The data can potentially be used to compare the information declared in tax returns with other financial records. Taxpayers therefore need to ensure that their income, expenses and other relevant details are properly reported in their annual returns.

The filing process is being conducted online, allowing taxpayers to submit their returns without physically visiting tax offices. The September 30 deadline means taxpayers have more than two months to complete the process after online filing begins.

Sources also said FBR expects around 3 million small traders to register under a special scheme designed for small businesses. The scheme is aimed at bringing a large number of small traders into the formal tax system.

The expected registrations could significantly expand the number of businesses connected with the country’s tax system. For taxpayers, the most important immediate step is to begin preparing their financial information before submitting their returns.

The tax authority has been working to improve the use of digital information and data to strengthen tax compliance. Taxpayers who miss the September 30 deadline could face consequences under applicable tax rules.

Further details about the filing process and requirements are expected to remain available through FBR’s online tax system.
