The Punjab government took this major step to promote a cashless economy by making digital payment compulsory in several service sectors. Restaurants, hotels and beauty parlours are now required to adopt QR code based payment systems immediately.
According to a circular issued by the Punjab Revenue Authority, selected service sector businesses must switch to digital payment methods. Officials say the main goal is to document the economy, improve tax transparency and make business transactions easier through modern technology.
The order clearly states that businesses must obtain a QR code enabled bank account approved by the State Bank of Pakistan within 14 days. The QR code facility must be fully active and usable. Business owners have also been directed to display the QR code at a visible place so customers can make digital payment without hesitation.
Authorities said that restaurants, hotels and beauty parlours deal with a large number of customers daily. Moving these sectors to digital payment will ensure proper transaction records. This step is expected to reduce tax evasion and increase government revenue.

The notification warns that legal action may be taken against businesses that fail to provide the QR code facility within the given deadline. The government described this move as part of wider federal and provincial digital reforms aimed at building a modern and transparent economic system.
This decision can change how people pay in daily life. Many customers still prefer cash, so the shift may take time. But digital payment creates a record and reduces hidden transactions. If implemented properly, it can increase tax collection and bring more transparency to the economy.
