(Web Desk): Punjab has made digital payments mandatory across the province, directing businesses to replace cash with QR codes and mobile apps to boost transparency.

The Government of Punjab has officially mandated digital payments across the province, issuing a formal notification to all relevant authorities to phase out cash-based transactions.

According to the directive, all commercial transactions will now be conducted through QR codes or mobile applications, making digital payment systems compulsory for businesses. Every commercial outlet and retail shop must prominently display a QR code to facilitate cashless payments.

The notification states that the move aims to implement a cashless system to improve public convenience, enhance transparency in transactions, and strengthen accountability. Authorities believe digital payments will reduce undocumented cash flows and improve financial oversight.

Petrol Pumps to Fully Shift to Digital Payments

As part of the policy, the Punjab government has ordered all petrol pumps to immediately ensure digital payment facilities. This includes payments via QR codes as well as mobile-based payment options for customers.

Additionally, the issuance of new petrol pump licenses will now be linked strictly to the availability of online booking and digital payment systems, signaling a tougher regulatory stance.

Public Reaction and Government Outlook

Officials say the initiative will make transactions safer, faster, and more secure for citizens while promoting the use of modern financial technology. On the other hand, residents have welcomed the move, noting that a cashless system could significantly reduce fraud and illegal transactions while encouraging innovation in the banking and fintech sectors.

The government has instructed all business entities to fully activate digital payment systems within the stipulated timeframe, warning that compliance will be strictly monitored.
