ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) Already burdened by inflation, the public has been hit with yet another blow as the government has increased the petroleum levy instead of offering relief on petroleum products.

The government has raised the petroleum levy on petrol by Rs8.02 per litre, bringing the total levy on petrol to Rs78.02 per litre.

Similarly, the levy on diesel has been increased by Rs7.01 per litre, raising the total levy on diesel to Rs77.01 per litre.

It is worth noting that if this increase had not been implemented, petrol prices could have been reduced by up to Rs8 and diesel by Rs7. However, with the hike now in place, any hopes of relief for consumers have vanished.

The decision has sparked strong public backlash, with many labeling the increase in petroleum levy as an anti-people move and demanding its immediate withdrawal.

Economic experts suggest that the hike may be an attempt to reduce the budget deficit, but warn that the burden will directly fall on ordinary citizens, who are already struggling amid a wave of inflation.
