(Web Desk): The first Muslim mayor-elect of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, has chosen Pakistani-American legal expert Lina M. Khan as the co-chair of his transitional team.

Zohran Mamdani, aged 34, will begin his term in office on January 1, 2026. His win in election marks the history as first time a Muslim and South Asian leader will head the largest and one of the most influential cities in the United States.

New York city annual budget is early about $116 billion, and the decisions of its administration have global impact.

Lina M. Khan, aged 36, has served as chairperson to U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Now, she will lead the transitional team along with three other senior officers of new York city.

In her response, Lina khan said that the voters have sent a very clear message that New York must become a where all families can live freely and with dignity.

She said that its an honor for her to work with Zohran Mamdani and to help him shape a city model that  mainly focuses on fairness, shared progress, and a truly democratic form of governance.

During her time as FTC Chair, Lina Khan gained recognition for her strong stance on consumer protection and antitrust regulation.

She closely monitored large corporate mergers and challenged business practices that risked harming public interest.

Her efforts earned praise from progressive groups, while her firm approach toward major tech companies such as Amazon and Google created notable resistance in Silicon Valley.
