Prominent young Bangladeshi political leader and key student movement figure Osman Hadi has died during treatment after a targeted gun attack, sparking widespread anger and protests across the country.
Osman Hadi was critically injured last Friday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him in the capital, Dhaka. He was rushed to a local hospital where doctors carried out an emergency operation, but his condition remained extremely serious.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Osman Hadi was shifted to Singapore the following day for advanced medical care. Despite continued treatment, he passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Singapore, according to officials.
Osman Hadi had emerged as one of the most influential faces of Bangladesh’s student-led movement that played a key role in the downfall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government in July. He served as the spokesperson of “Inqilab Mancha,” a political platform formed by student leaders, and enjoyed strong support among young voters.
He had also expressed his intention to contest the upcoming Bangladeshi general elections as an independent candidate, a move that was seen as a significant challenge to traditional political forces.
A day before his death, Singapore’s foreign minister visited Osman Hadi in hospital and later informed Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus about his critical condition through a phone call.
