Tehran (Web Desk): Iran has appointed Mohammad Baqer Zolqadr as the national security council secretary following the assassination of Ali Larijani.

The announcement was made by a senior official from the president’s office through a statement shared on social media.

Zolqadr was given the role through a direct presidential order, with approval from Iran’s top leadership.

He replaces Ali Larijani, who was killed last week in what Iranian officials described as an Israeli-US attack.

Larijani had been serving in the position since August 2025.

The new appointment comes at a critical time, as the ongoing conflict involving Iran has entered its fifth week. Officials believe Zolqadr’s experience will be important during this tense period.

He is a veteran commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and has held several key security positions in the past. Zolqadr has also worked in Iran’s judiciary for nearly a decade, gaining experience in legal and administrative matters. Earlier in his career, he served as deputy chief of the armed forces’ general staff for Basij affairs.

He also held senior roles within the IRGC, including leading its joint staff and serving as deputy commander-in-chief. In terms of education, Zolqadr studied economics and public administration at Tehran University before the 1979 revolution.

He later completed a doctorate in strategic management from the National Defense University. Experts say his long military and security background makes him a strong choice for such an important role.

The leadership change signals Iran’s focus on strengthening its security structure during a time of regional uncertainty.
