It is relevant to point out that Trump s remarks precede a scheduled meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu next week where he has promised to be "very firm." Trump was also hopeful that Netanyahu wants to end the conflict, and an agreement could be reached in the near future.
Notably, around 50 Israeli hostages are still in Gaza, with around 20 thought to be alive. Hamas has expressed interest in the resumption of talks but negotiations are at an impasse. Hamas still insists on a permanent ceasefire and complete Israeli withdrawal.
