Washington a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council was accused by Agrachi in his public response since the strikes. Washington was accused of violating the UN Charter, international law, and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) by striking what Agrachi described as Iran’s “peaceful nuclear installations”.
“The United States has committed a grave violation by launching an assault on our sovereign, civilian nuclear infrastructure,” Araghchi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
“The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences.”
“dangerous, lawless, and criminal behaviour” he termed US recent airstrikes and urged the international community to take notice urgently. “Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous act,” he stated. Furthermore, he warned that under international law, Iran reserves all the rights to defend itself.
“In accordance with the UN Charter and its provisions allowing a legitimate response in self-defence, Iran reserves all options to defend its sovereignty, interests, and people.”

The comments come after US President Donald Trump declared earlier Sunday that American forces had struck three Iranian nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—in cooperation with Israel. Although Iran acknowledged the strikes, it has downplayed the extent of the attacks.

The United States and its allies have long contested Iran s claim that its nuclear program is only for peaceful reasons. Fears of a wider confrontation in the already unstable Middle East have increased in response to the most recent military escalation.
Given the mounting calls for a robust retaliation response within Iran, diplomatic observers have cautioned that the strikes could scuttle any residual chances for Tehran and Washington to engage in negotiations.
