Citizens in Russia’s Sakhalin Island were stunned as two suns appeared simultaneously in the sky, a rare sundog phenomenon caused by ice crystals. Locals quickly captured the unusual spectacle on camera, sharing the incredible visual with the world.
According to international media reports, the phenomenon was a result of natural atmospheric conditions rather than an astronomical anomaly. Experts explained that the appearance of two suns is caused by tiny ice crystals in the atmosphere reflecting sunlight, creating the illusion of a second sun. This rare optical event is scientifically known as a “sundog” or parhelion.

Meteorologists further stated that extreme cold weather in the region contributes to such visual phenomena. On the day the “double sun” appeared, Sakhalin experienced temperatures as low as -14°C, with forecasts predicting a possible drop to -23°C. Such sub-zero temperatures create the perfect conditions for ice crystal formation in the upper atmosphere, producing these stunning light reflections.
Local residents described the scene as magical and otherworldly, highlighting how extreme winter conditions can sometimes produce extraordinary natural sights. Scientists emphasize that while these occurrences are rare, they are harmless and purely optical in nature.
